trust and believe

I’ve probably read John 14 a hundred times at this point in my life.

I could paraphrase most of it without even looking at the page.  I’ve underlined it, highlighted, scribbled notes all over it, but last Sunday in church two new phrases jumped off the page, refreshing my weary heart.

Believe me…

I tell you the truth…

For well over a year now, actually I take that back… for most of my adult life, I’ve wondered who is telling the truth.

I’ve given up on the news. One channel says on thing, the other channel says another.

I’ve read far too many opinions and watched more than enough YouTube videos to last me the rest of my life.

Everyone is convinced they’re right and the other side is wrong.

You must listen to the scientists.

You must listen to the educated.

You must listen to the government.

And you must not ask questions.

But what happens when history proves science actually had it wrong? Or when the facts are actually well-state opinions? Or when the ones giving the information benefit financially? Or when the truth is intentionally concealed?

Who do we listen to? Who do we trust? Who do we believe?

The answer is tucked in John 14.

To Jesus - the way, the truth, and the life.
