Reason #738

I have celebrated exciting life events today. I went to a wedding shower this morning, a baby shower this afternoon, and a birthday party tonight. I suppose the only other thing we could have added would have been a college graduation. Aside from that, I think I hit all of the major reasons to celebrate.

Today is my dad's birthday! It seems like we were just celebrating his last birthday. That's probably because 2013 zoomed by. Really, 2013 was a pretty big year for him. He retired from his job after 31 years, walked me down the aisle, and enrolled in college. After a few months of living the dream of retirement/dog sitter, he made the decision to start a new career path. This decision required him to go back to school, and so he successfully made it through his first semester and managed to land on the dean's honor roll. You know, as a child, you never expect to help your parents with homework or to lend them your old calculator and backpack. I definitely admire him for having the courage to go back to school because spending your nights studying for tests and doing homework is no easy task.

That's one thing I really admire about my dad. He doesn't take the easy way out. That's a rare trait these days. So many of us have this crazy idea that everything in life should be easy and happy and so when a challenge comes, people quit. They walk away, throw in the towel, and they set out to find what they believe is the next best thing. But if you can't make it through one challenge, what makes you think you can make it through another? If you are always in search for something easier, for something that makes you happier, you'll never find it. Because life isn't about being happy all the time. Life isn't easy, either. Life comes with challenges, it's hard, some days are really bad, and some times are really trying. But when you don't take the easy way out, when you choose the high road, when you work hard and don't give up, you realize life is also rewarding. Like the old saying goes, "You get out of it what you put into it."

So thanks, Dad, for never taking the easy way out. Thanks for always working hard at anything you've committed to do. Thanks for continuing to set a good example. For tackling the tough stuff rather than doing the bare minimum or just simply doing nothing. For never giving up or taking the easy way out. You're one of a kind, it's true. You always make me proud, and I know I'm not the only one who feels that way. Here's to another birthday, another year of life, and a new year of exciting adventures! Love you!

#738 - For a dad who is one of a kind!

"My children, listen when your father corrects you. Pay attention and learn good judgment, for I am giving you good guidance. Don’t turn away from my instructions." - Proverbs 4:1-2
