Reason #781
Secrets don't make friends, at least that's what they say. It's true. Secrets are best when out in the open, when you aren't carrying them all on your own and feeling weighted down by hold they have on your life. Because when the secret is out, even if it's just to one person, it's out. No longer does it keep you captive, isolated on your own little island. A secret shared is less burdensome because you often find you're not the only one with that secret.
One of the things I love about Aaron is his transparency. We made sure that transparency was a priority in our relationship up front. The truth is, it's just not fun living in paranoia and wondering if/when the other person will find out your well managed and concealed secrets. Because all secrets eventually float to the surface, and as we discussed today, relief often follows the reveal.
So why keep secrets, then? Why hide parts of our lives from one another as if they don't exist? We talked about this in Sunday school this morning.
"The woman named Folly is brash. She is ignorant and doesn’t know it. She sits in her doorway on the heights overlooking the city. She calls out to men going by who are minding their own business. “Come in with me,” she urges the simple. To those who lack good judgment, she says, “Stolen water is refreshing; food eaten in secret tastes the best!” But little do they know that the dead are there. Her guests are in the depths of the grave. " - Proverbs 9:13-18
The secret about that is the fact that it's done in secret. Secret acts that don't fulfill. Secret relationships that damage. Secret deeds that will not go unpunished. All little bits of deception we believe will never be found out. And yet we choke on them. We are burdened by the weight of those secrets. They torture us, taunt us, and fill our hearts with shame. Secrets that lead to more secrets that ruin our lives. Secrets that entangle secrets that enslave, secrets that trap us into living lives we never imagined for ourselves but we can't tell anyone. It's our little secret.
Jesus came to set us free. Free from our secrets. Free to share our secrets. Because there is wisdom that can be learned when we are transparent with one another. A secret benefits no one. Chains are broken when secrets are shared. Lives are transformed when it's all out in the open. And we realize the freedom that comes with honesty. When we live in the light and dwell in the truth, we have no secrets to hide. This is one of the many reasons Jesus came. Not so that we could keep secrets but that we would spread His life saving light into the secrets of the dark.
#781 - For freedom from secrets.
"Listen as Wisdom calls out! Hear as understanding raises her voice! On the hilltop along the road, she takes her stand at the crossroads. By the gates at the entrance to the town, on the road leading in, she cries aloud, “I call to you, to all of you! I raise my voice to all people. You simple people, use good judgment. You foolish people, show some understanding. Listen to me! For I have important things to tell you. Everything I say is right, for I speak the truth and detest every kind of deception. My advice is wholesome." - Proverbs 8:1-8
