Always give thanks
When I chose my shirt that morning, I had no idea how much I would need the reminder to give thanks before the day was over.
I received some disappointing news that sent my mind into a swirl of questions and doubts. I was frustrated as I waded through feelings of rejection and defeat.
“In all things give thanks...”
Like all, all things? No exceptions?
But aside from my shirt, thankfulness was nowhere to be found. I was far from thankful for this bit of news. “Lord, how could I be thankful for this,” I wondered over and over again.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 tells us these words are not only a command but the will of God for those who are in Jesus Christ.
It is an intentional practice and exercise to give thanks in all circumstances. God knows thankfulness isn’t always our first inclination. Yet as we practice giving thanks, our perspective and hearts are changed, however, we may need his help getting there.
“God, I want to give thanks in this circumstance, so please show me how.”
And you know what, he’ll help you process it. He’ll guide you through it because you’re following his will.
I’ll be honest, I’m still not feeling entirely thankful today. But I’ll give thanks for what I can now and I’ll continue to seek God’s help to do his will.
