Chosen
The twelve were reduced to eleven.
One made his choice. Chose a different path. And the original circle was broken.
Just as the scriptures had foretold.
It was time for another to take his place. Fill in the gap. And the disciples didn’t make the decision lightly.
“They put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed and said, ‘You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry… And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias.” (Acts 1:23-26)
The man God had divinely appointed for the position. Not based on a persuasive interview or a lucrative deal. Not because of an impressive resume or his charming personality.
God chose him because He knew his heart and because it was His will.
God’s good and perfect will.
Listen, friends, there will be moments when we are the Justus of the story, and at other times we will be the Matthias.
And in this western culture, the one that tells us if we simply hustle and work hard, push through obstacles and never give up, we’ll achieve that dream.
Whatever that dream may be.
But our world so quickly forgets the Author, the Originator, as we all are so swift to credit ourselves.
The athlete who put in the sweaty hours. The artist who spent decades honing their craft. The executive who devoted their early years to acquiring degrees and certifications.
But who designed the athlete in his mother’s womb? Who outfitted him with his tall frame and broad shoulders? Who planted him in just the right circumstance where a love for sports was cultivated and a good coach was invested?
And who gave the artist the eyes to see colors and shapes as if they were moving and alive? Who gave the singer an ear for pitch with vocal cords to match? Who wove a story deep in the author’s heart, developing within her an insatiable love for words on a page?
And who positioned the executive with the right opportunity at the time he was ready for the job? Who fills his lungs with breath each morning so he can rise and go to work?
It is God who decides, my friends. Surely, you see it is He who creates and plants, who positions and establishes.
And just as God chose Matthias for one opportunity, and Justus for something else, God has chosen you.
He’s chosen me, too.
But no significant opportunity is granted without waiting.
There is a process that must take place. And, as we often come to realize, it all depends on timing.
God’s timing.
He is working and moving. Piecing things together so it all falls perfectly in place.
So work diligently, and be prepared. God knows your heart, and He will ensure you land exactly where He has chosen you to be.
