Two Yokes, Your Choice

Get those roots touched up.

And go work out.

Keep the house clean.

Cook organic meals from scratch.

Wake up before the kids and do all the things.

Put on a full face of makeup.

Keep everyone’s wardrobe updated.

And go listen to this parenting podcast.

Plan a date night, too.

Use this lotion to minimize cellulite and this one to add a subtle tan.

And then apply this eye cream and night and this one in the morning to decrease those bags.

Take this supplement three times a day.

Also, get eight hours of sleep.

And maybe find a part time job on the side to help contribute to the bank account.

But be fully present with the children and keep their little brains stimulated.

Oh, and be sure to drink half your body weight in water every day.

The demands of the world weighed my shoulders. A burdening pile of things I needed to do, or things I needed to stop doing, in order to be healthy, happy, and successful.

Or so they said.

How do I keep up? There are only so many hours in a day. And there is only one me.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30

You feel it, too, don’t you? The weight of the world’s yoke? The endless demands that are always just out of reach. The ones that are constantly changing so that you can’t keep up.

And yet you try. You buy the things, go to the places, attempt the schedule, and all you’ve got to show for it is a weary and worn-down spirit.

God isn’t asking these things of you, my friend.

The demands of the culture will never be found in the pages of scripture.

Instead, when we open up the pages of God’s Holy word, we find quite the opposite.

In the place of a demanding world, we find a gentle Savior, Jesus, calling us to himself.

To learn from Him.

To walk along-side Him.

And instead of burdening us with a list of things to do, He offers us the very thing the world will never be able to give.

Soul-refreshing, life-giving, freedom-dwelling rest.

His easy yoke is yours for the taking. What are you waiting for?
